Eurocodes

Fitzroy's methodology to implement the Eurocodes is to initially have the proformas show all workings to the British Standards and have a Eurocode summary at the end, the design to the Eurocodes is completed in parallel but the workings are not displayed in the calculations file. When Eurocodes reach mainstream adoption we will switch this process over so that all workings are shown to the Eurocodes with a British Standard summary at the end for comparison.

The current British Standards are in the process of being replaced by Eurocodes, the aim is for this process to be complete by 2010. There will be a period of co-existance which commences when all parts in a package are available. Fitzroy is amending the proformas accordingly as the National Annexes for each Eurocode become available, as no design is allowed until the National Annexes are published. Information regarding the introduction of Eurocodes may be obtained from the Institution of Structural Engineers and the British Standards Institution.

In his introduction to the BSI Structural Eurocodes Companion (modified 02/03/09), Professor David Nethercot OBE FREng, Chairman IStructE Standing Committee on the Implementation of Eurocodes makes the following points

4. Recognize that the transition period will, in reality, extend over a number of years, with elements of parallel application. 7. Remain sanguine and take a balanced view - be particularly cautious when reading claims of what 'must' be done; the climate within which structural engineering is practiced in the UK is far less prescriptive than some would have us believe.
